Shortage in skilled labour and high costs of material has not acted as a hindrance to the construction industry.

Shortage of workers

Skilled labor shortages and supply chain issues are the two biggest issues plaguing construction businesses. When attendees of the webinar were polled, 52% said that skills and worker shortages were the leading challenges for their companies at present, followed by another 37% who said that supply chain delays were their biggest issue.

Skilled labor shortages aren’t new in construction, but Basu said that the demand for labor will only increase as time goes on. Construction companies will soon be busier than ever as evidenced by the Architecture Billings Index, which tracks how busy architecture firms are. The majority of attendees, when asked about their backlog, said that it has risen within the past three months, and when asked about their projections for their next year’s profits, the majority said they expected it to rise slightly higher or remain about the same.

Basu said that with older members of the workforce retiring, roles formerly filled by those with decades of experience will become vacant, further shrinking the number of employed workers.

However, there are some signs of life in pockets around the United States. The top four geographic areas of employment growth from February 2020 are centered in the Midwest, in metropolitan areas such as Minneapolis, Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Employment Statistics survey for May 2021. Basu said that it was “very surprising” that the markets were in the Midwest, and not elsewhere like the South or the West.

Overall, from February 2020 to April 2021, there has been a 2.9% decline in construction employment, but Basu said it is rebounding quickly.

High prices of construction material

As the construction industry rebounds, the prices of many building materials are reaching historically high levels.

In June, softwood lumber increased 125% year over year, according to the BLS, while overall price peaked in early May at more than $1,700 per thousand board feet. However, the price has dropped considerably in the past two months.

Basu predicted that much of the inflation that raised these prices isn’t permanent, but he also said that he didn’t expect the prices to come down anytime soon. Nevertheless, Basu concluded that the price was trending downward.

Basu said that eventually the market would even out, and with the high demand and prices for these materials, suppliers would up their productivity and capacity, which would in turn create more materials, driving down the cost.

“The cure for high prices is high prices,” Basu said.

Trahan Architects broke ground on the new Chapel of St. Ignatius and Gayle and Tom Benson Jesuit Center at the Loyola University in New Orleans. The new spiritual site and the community gathering space draw on elements of the Jesuit tradition, central to the University’s heritage. Through the circular design, the light-filled interior space and the predominance of natural materials, Trahan Architects creates a space of universal spirituality at the heart of the campus.

Located in a century-old campus, the project inserts a contemporary structure within historic brick-clad Gothic buildings; therefore, the design aims to express a certain monumentality. The main building material, concrete, is left apparent and will be cast in place using formwork made of different essence of wood, creating a vibrant texture. The design team experimented with different casting solutions to obtain a varied concrete surface.

The light-grey textured surface transitions into a softer natural clay plaster at the interior. Within the chapel, reinforcing the connection with the campus, is a glass opening framing the view towards an oak tree. The interior is organized as a series of interconnected circles circumscribed by a larger cylinder. While the chapel will be a Catholic liturgical venue, the Benson Jesuit Center is set to be a community space for people of all faiths.

The chapel is Trahan Architects’ second notable religious building, after the 2004 design of the Holy Rosary Complex, a parish in South Louisiana, which features similar inquiries into cast-in-place concrete and the use of natural light.

After months of delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, construction is going to begin soon, for the AC Hotel by Marriott in downtown Dayton.

Located on the East First Street, the hotel is right next to the Dragons Stadium

Jason Woodard with Woodard Development partnered with Crawford Hoyin to build the hotel with plans to break ground in March of last year, but then the pandemic hit.

“We always viewed it as a delay, not a ‘we’re not going to move forward,’” Woodard said.

Because of the partnership of the city of Dayton, the project will include a rooftop bar and event space.

The rooftop bar and restaurant will be 6,100 square feet, with indoor and outdoor patios, as well as 1,700 square feet of private event space and an outdoor terrace expected to be used for weddings and corporate events.

In a couple of weeks, the construction of the hotel is going to begin, and it will be a year and a half until completion.

Translucent is the new trend. Joongwoon, an architecture practice based out of Seoul, completed a translucent cabin in lake Tahoe in the United States. The structured is situated in a heavily wooded area, with an attention to its design so that blends with its surrounding. Named the lightus retreat, it favors on designing around the tree.

Joongwon architects’ lightus retreat takes its shape through the demarcation of the building’s footprint around the existing trees. Following this guidelines, the design has resulted in a compact structure organized around the roof structure instead of the plan. The property is volumetrically open and the linear experience of space unfolds to allow the vacationers to discover the cabin through a succession of compression-openness/ dark-light/ smooth textured. This design signifies, that travelling is not only reaching the destination, but a journey of all the sense.

The cabin’s exterior juxtaposes a natural Siberian larch with a synthetic polycarbonate, giving it its translucent nature. In the end, this suggests this project is only a sliver of a conceptually continue form, acknowledging the presence of ideas are much larger than the cabin itself, the architects said. To sum up, the surrounding that the cabin resides in, shapes the cabin, and the cabin shapes the light that comes inside.

Topcon Positioning Group unveils the Survey and construction software suite MAGNET 7, and is now available for sell.

What MAGENT 7 uses is cloud based connectivity to streamline workflows through GNSS receivers, total stations and other positioning tools and instruments. The use of such technology, leads to increase in productivity, efficiency and profitability levels across the job sites.

The software system is targeted towards improving accuracy while efficiently managing data and collaboration- in real time – with the project team.

Productivity features include an ability to connect to the newest version of the Sitelink3D job-site monitoring and management system. This enables office personnel to send machine models via the web portal directly to machines on site.

The Haul Truck app is something the new connection will allow access to. The app, sends real time data in a mass-haul environment, which dramatically improves efficiency. It includes haul volumes and truck locations – directly to the master schedule.

MAGNET7 provides new capability for calculating the International Roughness Index (IRI), a valuable indicator for resurfacing projects. The IRI data exports directly to ProVAL formats, commonly used in the paving industry, to report and validate road-surface smoothness against government guidelines.

The software, also provides enhanced terrain mapping capabilities for surveyors and an overall increase in file type capabilities.

In this article, we will look at the top construction companies in the US in 2021. Like most industries, the construction and engineering sectors have taken a heavy hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Work had to be stopped or slowed down to prevent the spread of this infectious disease, and as a result, companies are suffering major losses. Companies like Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), HOCHTIEF Aktiengesellschaft (XETRA: HOT.DE) and AECOM (NYSE: ACM) have all seen their revenues fall in 2020. The pandemic has also disturbed transport across the globe, which has led to the disruption of the supply chain of many companies. Reduction in revenues means many companies are also laying off their workers.

In the first quarter of 2020, the industry managed to add $900 billion to the US economy, but after the pandemic hit, they suffered major losses. The industry lost $60.9 billion, and jobs decreased to 6.5 million. This all amounted to two years of GDP gains and four years of job gains.

However, companies like Skanska AB (publ) (STO: SKA-B.ST), Mcdermott International Ltd. (OTC: MCDIF), and Tutor Perini Corporation (NYSE: TPC) that have gone through the 2008 recession knew what to expect and were better prepared. They had control over their leverage and credit and created a cushion with cost savings. However, the effects of the pandemic are still felt as despite having no shortage of orders, difficulty getting permits, delays and cancellations mean increased costs for companies. Problems in the supply chain also mean higher procurement costs for material and equipment.

Top 5 Construction Companies in USA in 2021

Bechtel Corporation: Revenue: $17.6 Billion USD, 2020

The largest privately-owned construction company in the US, Bechtel is an engineering, procurement, construction, and project management company with headquarters in Virginia. Their infrastructure sector manages transport, power lines, and grids. They have built thousands of miles of roads, bridges, and rails. These also include subways and airports. They have also built 100s of power plants and hydroelectric facilities. The number of cities built globally by them totals 20.

It will be on the 11th of June 2021, that the 20th Serpentine Pavillion, designed by Johammesburg- based practice counterspace, directed by Sumayya Vally is set to open. Having been postponed by over a year, due to the global pandemic, the pavilion will temporarily be on display till the 17th of October 2021, on the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn in Kensignton Gardens.

While Counterspace is the 20th practice to accept the invitation to design the Serpentine pavilion, Vally, a TIME100 Next List honoree, is the youngest architect to be commissioned for this internationally renowned architecture program. The programe has been support by Goldman Sachs, with this year’s invention being “based on past and present places of meeting, organising and belonging across London”. As a result of abstracting, superimposing, and splicing architectural elements, the forms in the pavilion vary in the scale of intimacy. A specially commissioned sound program for the Pavilion, Listening to the City, will feature work by artists including Ain Bailey and Jay Barnard, connecting visitors to the stories and sounds of lost spaces across London.

My practice, and this Pavilion, is centred around amplifying and collaborating with multiple and diverse voices from many different histories; with an interest in themes of identity, community, belonging and gathering. The past year has drawn these themes sharply into focus and has allowed me the space to reflect on the incredible generosity of the communities that have been integral to this Pavilion. This has given rise to several initiatives that extend the duration, scale and reach of the Pavilion beyond its physical lifespan. In a time of isolation, these initiatives have deepened the Pavilion’s intents toward sustained collaboration, and I am excited to continue this engagement with the Serpentine’s civic and education teams and our partners over the summer and beyond.– Sumayya Vally of Counterspace.

Set to open on 11 June 2021, the project translates the shapes of London into the structure, referencing the architecture of places of worship, markets, restaurants, bookshops, and local cultural institutions that are particularly relevant to migrant communities in neighbourhoods such as Brixton, Hoxton, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Edgware Road, Barking and Dagenham, Peckham and Notting Hill, among others. In fact, during summer, fragments of the intervention will be installed in neighbourhoods across the city, to support and facilitate gatherings and impromptu interactions, to honor the history of places that have held communities over time. “A specially commissioned programme for the Pavilion, Listening to the City, will feature work by artists including Ain Bailey and Jay Bernard, connecting visitors to the stories and sounds of lost spaces across London”.

Burj Khalifa fame architect Adrian D. Smith was born on August 19, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 4, his family moved to Southern California where he grew up. His keen interest in drawing made him study architecture.

Smith attended Texas A&M University, pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture and was simultaneously involved with the Corps of Cadets. Leaving his graduation midway, Smith started working for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) in 1967.

He graduated in 1969 from the University of Illinois, Chicago College of Architecture and Arts. In 2013, Smith was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from Texas A&M university.

In 1960s Smith started working at a firm SOM as a young architect. He started designing Burj Khalifa while he was still attached with that firm. The firm SOM was famous for producing corporate projects mostly but Burj Khalifa was an exception.

Smith got retirement from the firm three years earlier than the official time and took a ten years lease on an office and gathered a number of colleagues to work with and began another phase of his career.

Smith has great interest in making tall buildings and remarks that such buildings act as landmarks and leave a great influence on their surroundings.

The name of the firm set up by Adrian Smith is Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) which focuses majorly on providing a platform to work for high-performance, energy-efficient and sustainable buildings on international level.

Smith has great passion for the use of vernacular and indigenous forms and compositions and this can be seen in his work as well. With evolution in the world of technology he is up to the integration of regional techniques and industrial methods for his designs. He focuses majorly on the physical features of each of his design.

Since the major goal for all of his projects is to achieve the environmental sustainability so he puts so much attention to location, climate, geographical, geological, cultural, and social influences of site. During the course of some recent years, he has adopted a new design approach of producing energy “on site”.

In order to make sustainable buildings with less energy and more efficiency he designs buildings in such a way that they absorb more and more energy from natural resources including sunlight, wind and geothermal conditions thus producing energy for projects on the respective sites.

This not only aids the energy but also lessens the dependency of buildings on the local infrastructure. Smith’s this technique has opened up new dimensions in the field of architecture and led to the proposal of new philosophy in architectural world called Global Contextualism.

Smith has always had great interest in international projects and very actively took part in all the development programs he could get his hands on. He has been a keynote speaker at the ABN Amro symposium (1990); the Ouaternario conference in Singapore (1991); the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Fifth World Congress (1995); CTBUH World Congress Dubai (2009); CTBUH World Congress Chicago (2011); CTBUH World Congress Shanghai (2012); and has also lectured in Frankfurt, London, Buenos Aires, Notre Dame, Amsterdam, Prague, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, New York, Chicago and Washington DC among other locations.

Adrian Smith has been a registered architect in twelve states of the USA and his designs have won him more than 125 awards which include 5 international, 9 national and 3 Urban Land Institute Awards for excellence. He is making most of his time working on his projects with a lot of dedication and unstoppable energy.

As a home buyer, an all-cash offer on a home, may help you stand out when competition is tight. Let’s face it! Cash purchases, are in fact much less risky, with fewer chances of financial hang-ups and low appraisals, and tend to make for fast transactions.

Unlike the 5% all-cash deal over the first two months in a typical year, the number has soared to 20% this year. Investors, People looking for second homes and international purchases, are majorly taking the all-cash route, and also some older buyers, who use the money that get by selling their previous property according to analysis by realtor.com.

“If you have to compete with other potential buyers, an all-cash offer puts you in a more competitive spot,” says Danielle Hale, chief economist at realtor.com®. It “can make you a more attractive buyer.”

Realtor.com® pinpointed the following metro areas with the highest increases in cash sales in January and February of this year compared to a year earlier (pre-pandemic). The following areas had the highest number of cash sales in that period:
